The Goon Film Status

Because I’ve been answering the same questions over and over again, and there's been some misunderstanding about where the Goon film is at, I thought I’d just write this to fill people in.

THE GOON FILM IS STILL ON THE TABLE
David Fincher and Blur still have the option for the Goon film and are still actively looking for funding.

Recently some sites have been saying the Goon film has been nixed based on comments from Paul Giamatti saying he didn’t know where the film was at and we must have ran out of money. Let me assure you we have not run out of money… because we never had any money to run out of.

( UPDATE: I just got an email from Giamatti saying he feels like a douche that this became a topic. He did say that he facetiously muttered, "Maybe they can't get the money.", but never said anything about money drying up. But as everyone knows, this is how the internet works. He also said I could declare him full of crap and a nuisance... which would only make him more suited to play Franky, but are completely untrue. His time already devoted to this project is greatly appreciated. )

It's been a while since anyone spoke to Giamatti about the project and I guess he wasn’t kept in the loop as to what was going on. So zip up your fly, Internet. The Goon is in the exact same position it’s been in for the past couple of years. Prepping the design and script while searching for funding.

I don’t have a role in acquiring the funding for the film, but I speak to Tim Miller at Blur, Fincher, and Mike Richardson with Dark Horse Entertainment every few weeks to get an update on the status. And last I spoke with Fincher and Miller they were gearing up for another round of meetings to try to acquire funding. We have to find the right people that get what we’re trying to do and will give us the budget we require. It’s going to take time when you’re dealing with a project like the Goon film. An animated (and not aimed towards toddlers) gangster film with monsters, murder, and tons of dark humor… where have you seen that before?

( UPDATE:

The things that make the Goon so completely unique are, unfortunately, more than mere concerns to corporate hollywood.  The problem is trying to work it through the pla-dough press that is development and emerge with our dignity and YOUR hard fought independent voice intact.

But I am undeterred--this atom can be split.

-David Fincher )

It’s going to take time to find a truly creative studio with a unique sense of vision to partner with us on this film. Fincher, Blur, Dark Horse, and I aren’t just throwing this out there. We want it done right and in the spirit of the source material. Doing something new is never easy… or fast.

Trust me, when someone steps up and we get this slated I will be screaming it from the rooftops. And if Fincher and Blur decide to pass, I will also let you know by posting something on thegoon.com. But there is zero change right now. We all remain dedicated and confident that we’ll get this thing done.

  1. I would like to see The Goon movie more than another Superman movie (Man Of Steel). Just because the goon isn't an A list name, doesn't mean its not marketable. Movies based on independent comics have done well in the box office. I am also SO glad the The Goon is back on the comicbook stands (yes i actually buy monthly comics weekly, but I do support same day digital). The Goon is one of those bimonthly books thats worth the wait.

    You have my fan support.

  2. How much did it cost just to do the test footage? i mean just those teasers alone are true to form enough for me at least, i can't imagine what kind of funding would go beyond the awesome that you've already done here. Sounds like it will take a while but i really hope it won't that's for sure.

You have a lot of awesome people already involved, someone needs to just FUND this thing already. Thought about running indiegogo or kickstarter campaigns? surely you would at least raise a bit of money maybe not all that you would need but it's a step in the right direction. Set up a bonus for people who pay like a phone call from Clancy Brown or bunch of free Goon comics or something? i dunno just an idea.

  3. Maybe I'm naive... but what about sourcing your funding via Kickstarter? I'd certainly contribute, and I'm sure most of the rest of your readers would as well.

  4. I pray that The Goon movie works out. I'm tired of all these sequels and play-it-safe copycat films. The Goon is new and fresh and I know it'll find an audience. It was complete luck I managed to discover The Goon as I did not frequent comic book shops before, and I'm sure many others will discover their new favorite comic book after seeing the movie.

  5. I've thought about kickstarter to see if I could just finance the film myself, but even if we raised a million bucks, which would be incredible, that's still not enough to make the thing. It's just not realistic.

    Japan.

Have you thought about looking for funding in the Far East?

  8. I think Kickstarter.com is a great idea too. A lot of projects are super-funded on there.

  9. ...Believe me, there's few people other than myself who would be on Cloud 9 instantly were they to see a finished Goon feature, but I do think that despite [a] the sterling-est efforts of our uber-hero Mr Powell, and [b] the potential (although rather-half-hearted-sounding] 'involvement' of a slightly "left of centre" Hollywood big noise like David Fincher, the sad state of the predictable, by-the-guidebook, homogenous Hollywood output that dictates the box office means that it is unlikely to prevail. Perhaps we need someone who is inside, yet outside, the "system", someone like Robert Rodriguez - who is a fanboy, a maverick and a determined creator. If we can see the likes of "Sin City" get visualized so stunningly with deference and respect for the original material, then perchance we could eventually be thrilling to the sight of a silver screen stroll down Lonely Street. Here's another thought: what about a straight-to-DVD product? If the final feature was deemed to be of an insufficiently marketable and profitable nature for Hollywood bigwigs to invest in (the standard full big-screen, making prints, distribution, etc etc scenario...) then why not bypass that loss-making stage and go straight for a made-for-DVD collectors' edition? Surely that's gotta be worth a shot?

  11. Seriously, crowdfunding via Kickstarter worked wonders for Iron Sky.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Actually, my bad: Iron Sky was funded by pre-selling DVDs and merchandise. However, the Double Fine Adventure game, the stop-motion animated I Have Your Heart film, and other projects show that Kickstarter is a viable idea.

  13. Iron Sky definitely shows what can be done away from the Hollywood model. Does it have to be made there (I know it doesn't physicaly) and in that model?

  14. would it be easier to go the 2D route and release a series of DVDs?

    ReplyDelete
  15. It'd be amazing to see this movie made. I just saw the trailer and I'm already sold. Maybe the higher ups should look at the general publics reaction rather than their own personal agendas which are obviously backwards. What happened to innovation and risk taking?

  16. Doublefine is over the 3 million mark and if you added DVD pre-sales and merch I'm guessing you could at least double that. Heck I would be giving money to you and I didn't give to Doublefine - I donated to Wastland 2 instead.

  17. This project is Epic. Please don´t make a softer version of the movie just because its taking too long to get the funds.

If you´re thinking about to open a Kickstarter aiming milions of dollars, let me know.

  18. fuck hollywood, ask Gabe Newell! Valve just put out source film maker, maybe they need a good IP to show off what it can do, blurs extremely talented and could probably get into gear with it fairly quickly. and you could avoid hollywood neigh sayin' pansies who only want films that make their shit pussies look like flowers.

  19. Have you guys tried using a kickstarter account to get some of the funding that way the fans that truly want this movie to happen can help by providing some of the money you need to make an awesome movie lots of us want to go see.

  20. Agreed with er... anonmous? Kickstarter might be the answer, I for one would have no problems kicking some sheckles towards this production after watching the trailer and being a long time Goon reader. OR? Do a pre-sale or go the route of Red State? Tour the flick to make back the profits?

  21. Looks like Kickstarter is going to happen.
